A parking brake shoe is a small, friction-lined, curved component that grips the inside of a mini-drum surface to hold your vehicle stationary when the parking brake is engaged. Most cars and trucks after 1990 have rear disc brakes, and the parking brake cannot use the service rotors directly. Instead, a separate set of parking brake shoes presses against a small drum surface machined into the centre of the rear rotor hat.
This makes parking brake shoes fundamentally different from rear drum brake shoes, which handle everyday stopping. Parking brake shoes only engage when you pull the lever or press the pedal. They rarely make contact during normal driving, which is why they last a long time and are so often forgotten.
